If you have noticed an explosion of scalp scrubs, scalp serums, and scalp massagers in the past year, you are witnessing the beauty industry's latest frontier. "Scalp care is the new skincare" has become the marketing mantra, and like most beauty trends, it contains a kernel of truth wrapped in a lot of hype.

The truth: the scalp is skin, and it benefits from the same basic principles that guide facial skincare. Cleansing, exfoliation, hydration, and sun protection all apply. An unhealthy scalp — one that is inflamed, flaky, or excessively oily — produces weaker hair. Addressing scalp health can genuinely improve hair quality, growth rate, and retention.

The hype: you do not need a ten-step scalp routine any more than you need a ten-step facial routine. A few targeted products, used consistently, will deliver the majority of the benefit. Most people need only two additions to their existing hair care: a scalp exfoliant used once a week, and a lightweight scalp serum applied to clean, damp roots.

Our favorite scalp exfoliant is the Ouai Scalp and Body Scrub ($38). The physical exfoliation from sugar crystals combined with chemical exfoliation from glycolic acid removes product buildup and dead skin without irritation. Use it before shampooing, once a week.

Healthy hair grows from a healthy scalp. Everything else is styling.

Do Scalp Serums Work?

The evidence is mixed but promising. Minoxidil remains the only FDA-approved topical for hair growth, and it works. Newer serums containing peptides, caffeine, and niacinamide show encouraging results in small studies, but the data is not yet robust enough to call them game-changers.

What scalp serums do reliably is improve scalp condition — reducing flaking, soothing irritation, and creating a better environment for hair growth. Whether they directly stimulate growth is still debatable. If your scalp is unhealthy, fixing that alone can improve hair appearance significantly.

The Verdict

Scalp care is not a gimmick, but it also does not require a cabinet full of products. Cleanse gently, exfoliate weekly, and moisturize if your scalp is dry. That is 80% of the benefit for 20% of the effort.

Our rating: 4.1 out of 5. Legitimate science, overhyped product category. Keep it simple.
