The concealer market is saturated with products that look incredible in advertisements and disappointing in real life. The reason is simple: most concealer marketing features models who do not actually have dark circles. When you test these products on people with genuine periorbital hyperpigmentation — the medical term for dark under-eye circles — the performance landscape looks very different.

We recruited six testers with varying degrees of dark circles, from mild shadows to deep genetic hyperpigmentation, and had them test nine concealers over two weeks each. The results were illuminating.

The standout was the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer ($31), which remains the benchmark for a reason. Its creamy texture blends effortlessly into the under-eye area without settling into fine lines (a common problem with full-coverage concealers), and the shade range is broad enough to match most skin tones. For deep dark circles, you need the right shade — typically one or two shades lighter than your foundation — and NARS makes this achievable.

For budget-conscious shoppers, the Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer ($9) has been a drugstore hero for years, and it still earns that title. The sponge applicator is hygienic and convenient, the coverage is impressively buildable, and the formula does not crease excessively. It is not as refined as NARS, but at a third of the price, it is remarkably close.

The best concealer for dark circles is not the one with the highest coverage. It is the one that covers without creasing, caking, or drawing more attention to the area.

Application Technique Matters

Even the best concealer will crease if you apply too much. The correct technique for dark circles is to apply a thin layer with a small brush or your ring finger, tap (do not rub) to blend, and set with a light dusting of translucent powder. If you need more coverage, build in thin layers rather than applying one thick coat.

Color correction is also worth considering. For blue-toned dark circles, a peach or salmon corrector applied before concealer neutralizes the discoloration, allowing you to use less concealer overall. This approach looks more natural than piling on opaque product.

The Verdict

Dark circles are one of the most common beauty concerns, and the right concealer can make a dramatic difference. NARS remains the gold standard, but excellent options exist at every price point.

Our rating: 4.2 out of 5. Coverage without creasing is the holy grail, and these five deliver it.
